How to Transport an E-Bike on Your Car

By Mark SekulaNovember 2, 20263 min read

Quick answer

Use a hitch-mounted platform rack rated for your e-bike’s weight; most e-bikes weigh 50 to 80 pounds, which is too heavy for most trunk and roof racks. Remove the battery before driving to lighten the load and protect it, and consider a loading ramp.

E-bikes are much heavier than regular bikes, so the rack you used for your old road bike probably won’t work. Here’s how to carry one safely.

Why the usual racks fall short

The best option: a hitch-mounted platform rack

A platform rack slides into a trailer hitch receiver and holds the bike by its wheels and frame. Look for:

Check your vehicle’s limits

Your hitch has a tongue weight limit: the downward weight it can carry. Add the rack’s weight to the bikes’ weight. Two 65-pound e-bikes plus a 50-pound rack equals 180 pounds, which exceeds some smaller vehicles’ limits. Check your owner’s manual.
