What Size E-Bike Do I Need for My Height?
Most brands size frames by rider height: roughly small for about 5'0" to 5'5", medium for 5'5" to 5'10", large for 5'10" to 6'2", and extra large above that. Charts vary by brand, so always check the specific bike’s chart and your inseam.
A bike that doesn’t fit is uncomfortable, harder to control, and more tiring to ride. E-bikes add a wrinkle: they’re heavy, so being able to put a foot down confidently at a stop matters even more than on a regular bike.
A typical size chart
Every brand publishes its own chart, but most land close to this:
| Rider height | Typical frame size |
|---|---|
| 4'10" to 5'3" | Extra small or small |
| 5'3" to 5'7" | Small or medium |
| 5'7" to 5'11" | Medium |
| 5'11" to 6'2" | Large |
| 6'2" and up | Extra large |
Many e-bikes come in only one or two sizes, often described as "fits riders 5'3" to 6'3"." Those one-size bikes rely on adjustable seat posts and handlebars, and they fit people near the middle of the range best.
Why inseam matters
Two people of the same height can have very different leg lengths. Inseam (the distance from the floor to your crotch, measured in socks against a wall) tells you whether you can straddle the frame comfortably. This is called standover height. For an e-bike, you want to stand over the frame with both feet flat and a little clearance.
When you’re between sizes
- Pick the smaller size if you prefer an upright, relaxed ride or confident footing at stops.
- Pick the larger size if you ride longer distances and like a more stretched-out position.
- Consider a step-through frame, which removes most standover worries.
Signs a bike fits
- With the pedal at its lowest point, your knee is slightly bent, not locked straight.
- You can reach the handlebars without locking your elbows or hunching forward.
- You can stop and put a foot down without tipping the bike sharply.
Buying online
Check the brand’s chart for the specific model, note the seat post height range, and confirm the return policy before you buy. If you’re over about 6'2", look specifically for XL frames or bikes listed for tall riders. We cover that in e-bikes for heavier and taller riders. Our finder asks for your height and filters out bikes listed outside your range.
